The King's Indian Attack with 1.Nf3

A flexible kingside fianchetto repertoire connecting central control with active plans against French, Slav and Caro-Kann structures.

Begin with 1.Nf3 and build a flexible centre around e4 and d3. Our fianchetto supports several plans: a space-gaining e5 advance, an opening of the centre with d4, or queenside play when Black prevents the usual attack. The defensive pawn structure determines which pieces need improving and where counterplay will appear. Learn the attacking patterns together with their limits, so every line ends with a practical plan for the position on the board.

1. Main setup: keep the centre flexible

11 lines

We build the familiar fianchetto structure while keeping the centre flexible. Against an early d5 and Nf6, e5 can gain space with tempo, but the advance works best when the supporting pieces are ready. This chapter connects development with the choice of central structure. Watch Black's queenside activity and pawn breaks, then decide whether a kingside buildup or a central exchange offers the more useful plan.

2. Early queen moves: time the central break

5 lines

An early queen move changes the tactical details of our central advance. The queen may support a pawn break, create a pin, or become a target for development with tempo. We keep the same compact setup but calculate the available exchanges before committing to e5. The aim is to gain useful activity while staying aware of the queen's threats against the centre and our king.

3. Kingside space: bring the pieces forward

9 lines

Kingside space becomes useful when the pieces can occupy the squares behind the advancing pawns. These lines bring knights, bishops and queen toward Black's king while the centre limits some defensive movement. Our attack must still respect queenside counterplay and central breaks. Follow the routes of the pieces, count exchanges carefully, and distinguish a practical initiative from a position that already offers a forced tactical result.

4. Advanced attacks: calculate before sacrificing

3 lines

These variations examine material investments that open lines near Black's king. A sacrificed knight or pawn needs concrete compensation from checks, active pieces and restricted defensive squares. We calculate the resulting material balance instead of relying on a familiar attacking picture. When Black defends accurately, preserving coordination and recognizing the limits of the attack are just as important as spotting the initial opportunity.

5. Slav setup: challenge the bishop barrier

5 lines

Black's Slav-style setup develops the light-squared bishop outside the pawn chain and makes a routine kingside attack less automatic. We challenge that arrangement through central space, timely exchanges and useful knight routes. The bishop's location determines whether a pawn advance gains time or merely weakens our own cover. Build the position patiently, then choose a break that improves the pieces and keeps Black's counterplay manageable.

6. Early bishop sorties: gain time with the centre

6 lines

An early bishop sortie gives us a target, but chasing it must serve the position. These lines use pawn advances and central development to gain time against the bishop while checking the tactical relationship between our queen and knights. We should know where the king will be safe before loosening the pawn cover. When the bishop retreats, use the gained space to complete coordination rather than continue advancing automatically.

7. Slav structures: build the attack patiently

4 lines

The Slav pawn structure can leave the centre stable enough for longer piece maneuvers. We organize the knights, queen and rooks around the available squares, preparing an attack only when Black's defensive arrangement permits it. Central exchanges may instead produce an isolated pawn or a more open game. Recognize those changes early, support our own weaknesses, and use active pieces to make the structure work.

8. French structure: meet the active bishop

4 lines

Black's active bishop changes the usual French-style attacking picture. We retain the compact setup but keep d4 available, using a central challenge when closing with e5 would give the opponent an easy defense. Some exchanges leave an isolated d-pawn, making piece activity and the timing of simplification important. Coordinate the rooks and minor pieces before deciding whether the kingside or the centre offers our clearest play.

9. Fianchetto structures: choose the pawn break

20 lines

Black meets our fianchetto with its own, creating a contest over the long diagonal and the central breaks. The knight's square matters: e5 gains time against Nf6, while a knight on e7 calls for different preparation. These lines include both quiet maneuvers and concrete sacrifices. Follow the pawn exchanges carefully, assess the resulting material honestly, and use the centre to support whichever flank offers useful targets.

10. Caro-Kann structure: develop around d3

13 lines

The Caro-Kann structure allows Black's light-squared bishop to develop early and creates several distinct middlegames. We may chase that bishop, enter a queenless position, or keep the fianchetto and challenge Black's broad centre. The position determines the king's destination and the appropriate pawn break. Learn the purpose of each change in structure, keeping development and material balance in view before choosing an attacking plan.
