Key ideas

f7 is defended only by the king

Bishop on c4 and knight on g5 both hit f7. After 4...d5 5.exd5, recapturing with the knight lets White sacrifice on f7.

Qf3+ forks king and knight

After 6...Kxf7 7.Qf3+, the king must step to e6 to keep the d5-knight, and stays in the centre for a long time.

Black’s best is 5...Na5

Strong players avoid the Fried Liver with 5...Na5, attacking the bishop. White keeps an extra pawn but has to play precisely.

Prepare for the Traxler

4...Bc5 ignores the threat on f7 and counterattacks f2. The course answers with 5.Bxf7+.

Common mistakes

Sacrificing on f7 when Black played 5...Na5

The Fried Liver only works after 5...Nxd5. Against 5...Na5, save the bishop with 6.Bb5+.

Slow moves after the sacrifice

Once the king is on e6, every tempo counts: Nc3, O-O and d4 open lines before Black consolidates.

Forgetting the Traxler

4...Bc5 is a real counter-gambit. Know the 5.Bxf7+ answer before you play 4.Ng5.
